Why Many International Couples Choose Denmark

Denmark has become one of the most popular places in Europe for international couples who want to get married abroad. Compared with many other countries, the legal process is relatively straightforward, which makes Denmark an attractive option for couples from around the world.
Every year, couples from countries such as Germany, the UK, the United States and Australia travel to Denmark to celebrate their wedding. Some choose a quiet civil ceremony, while others combine their wedding with a short trip to explore the country.
Denmark also offers a variety of beautiful locations for weddings, from historic cities to coastal landscapes.
Popular Places to Get Married in Denmark
One of the reasons Denmark is so popular for international weddings is the variety of unique locations available.

Ærø Island (Ærø Kommune)

Ærø has become one of the most famous wedding destinations in Denmark. The island hosts thousands of international weddings every year and is known for its charming town Ærøskøbing, colourful historic houses and romantic seaside atmosphere.
Many couples choose Ærø for a relaxed destination-style wedding.

Copenhagen

Copenhagen is the capital of Denmark and one of the most convenient places for couples travelling from abroad.
Ceremonies are typically held at Copenhagen City Hall (Københavns Rådhus), located in the centre of the city. After the ceremony, couples often explore the nearby streets, canals and gardens for wedding portraits.
Helsingør

The historic town of Helsingør is home to Kronborg Castle (Kronborg Slot), a UNESCO World Heritage site famous for its connection to Shakespeare’s Hamlet.
The castle, harbour and coastal views create a dramatic and romantic setting for wedding photos.
Stevns Klint

Located south of Copenhagen, Stevns Klint is a UNESCO-listed coastline known for its impressive white cliffs and views of the Baltic Sea.
Couples looking for a natural and scenic landscape often choose this area for wedding portraits or elopements.

Odense

Odense, the birthplace of Hans Christian Andersen, offers charming historic streets, parks and classic Danish architecture.
It provides a relaxed and beautiful setting for couples who prefer a quieter city wedding.
Legal Requirements for Foreign Couples

Before getting married in Denmark, couples must apply through the Danish Agency of Family Law (Familieretshuset).
This authority reviews the application to confirm that both partners meet the legal requirements to marry.
Once approved, couples receive a Certificate of Marital Status (Prøvelsesattest) which allows them to marry anywhere in Denmark.
The process usually includes:
Submitting an application to Familieretshuset (Danish Agency of Family Law)
Providing documentation such as passports and proof of identity
Receiving the Prøvelsesattest (Certificate of Marital Status)
Booking a ceremony with the municipality where the wedding will take place

A Photographer’s Perspective

Over the past 16+ years, I have photographed weddings, elopements and civil ceremonies across Denmark, including Copenhagen, Helsingør, Stevns Klint and other beautiful locations.
Many couples I meet travel to Denmark specifically because the legal process is straightforward and the country offers a relaxed and welcoming environment for international weddings.
After the ceremony, couples often explore nearby streets, gardens or coastal landscapes for portraits that capture both their wedding day and the atmosphere of Denmark.
